Growing out of Kyoto American Studies Summer Seminar, the joint program with the American Center at Kyoto University, the International Institute of American Studies (IIAS) at Doshisha University was established in 1958.

Since then, IIAS has been conducting research in wide range of academic disciplines regarding the United States of America, and providing the variety of resources to the public. IIAS is one of the finest research institutes focusing on American studies in Japan, dedicated to creating and sharing transformative ideas across the humanities and social sciences.

IIIAS also hosts public lectures in the spring and fall every year, and sponsors lectures and symposia for specialists, inviting distinguished guests, both Japanese and non-Japanese.
